Of uncertain origin.[1] Probably related to Proto-Slavic *zajęcь (hare); if so, then both originate from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰey- (to drive, propel). Older theories take the word's original meaning as "to gambol, jump", from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ- (to drive), similar to Sanskrit अज् (aj, goat).[2]
