From an unattested Byzantine Greek *γαλεανός (*galeanós), from Koine Greek καλλεανός (kalleanós), a derivative of κάλαϊς (kálaïs, turquoise-like stone), probably from Ancient Greek καλάϊνος (kaláïnos, blue-green, bluish (esp. of stones, earthenware, etc.)). Doublet of γαλάζιος (galázios).[1]
