Etymology

Inherited from Byzantine Greek κουνουπίδιν (kounoupídin) (12th century),[1] probably from a noun *κανωπίδιον (*kanōpídion), diminutive of Hellenistic κάνωπον (kánōpon, a kind of short tree or bush).[2][3] See city of Κάνωπος (Kánōpos).

Also see the dialectal synonym καρναπίδι (karnapídi) / καρναμπίκι (karnampíki) / καρναμπίτι (karnampíti),[4] ultimately from κράμβη (krámbē) with influence from (Ottoman) Turkish, as well as Albanian kunipidhë, from Ottoman Turkish قرنابیت (karnabit), قنبیط (kunnebit), from Arabic قَرْنَبِيط (qarnabīṭ), قُنَّبِيط (qunnabīṭ), itself from Ancient Greek κραμβίδιον (krambídion), a diminutive of κράμβη (krámbē).[5] Doublet of καρναμπίτι (karnampíti).
