Often derived from an unattested *λύκη (*lúkē, “light”) + *βᾱ́ς (*bā́s, “going”) (seen in βιβᾱ́ς (bibā́s)), as “path of light”, but Beekes finds this unconvincing. He rather suggests a Pre-Greek origin, in view of the alternative form with "μ" and the suffix "-αντ-".
