Ancient Greek

Etymology

Differs from Proto-Germanic *malhō (leather bag), which is from Proto-Indo-European *molko- (leather pouch), only in the velar and accent. It has therefore been assumed that the Greek word is a borrowing, perhaps from Thracian. Also Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌻𐌲𐍃 (balgs, wineskin) and Proto-Celtic *bolgos (sack, bag) have been compared, in which case the Greek word must have been phonetically influenced by ἀμέλγω (amélgō, to milk).
