Adjectival formation from ρηχαίνω (richaíno, to become shallow), a verbal formation derived from Ancient Greek ῥηχίη (rhēkhíē), the Ionic variant of ῥᾱχῐ́ᾱ (rhākhíā, flood tide; breakers of the sea).[1] The sense development would be "to become like a tide" > "to become shallow".
