Calque of Ancient Greek Μεγάλη Ῥωσσίᾱ (Megálē Rhōssíā), attested since 1347. This term was coined by the Patriarch of Constantinople to differentiate it from "Little Russia" (Μικρὰ Ῥωσσίᾱ). Can be analysed as вели́кий (velíkij, “greater”) + -о- (-o-) + Ро́ссия (Róssija, “Rus, Russia”).
