Ket

Тъъль куʼ.

Etymology

An apocopate derivation from кугуль (glowing coal, charred log), as evident by the 18th century attested Imbak Ket kóhil (coal, embers); from Late Proto-Yeniseian *kʰu-pʰʌλ (coal), most likely derived from Proto-Yeniseian *kuw (coal).

Cognate with Yug куфыл (kúfɨl), Kott hupôj, Assan kuvulán and Arin kuburúŋ (glowing coals).

Perhaps related to Proto-Turkic *kȫ-ń- (to burn) and Proto-Mongolic *köge (soot, obstacle, hindrance), however, whether Yeniseian forms are the progenitor or were borrowed from either Mongolic or Turkic forms is not clear.
