Inherited from Old East Slavic лезъ (lezŭ, point of a blade). Further etymology is unclear. Trubachyov proposes that the term came from the honey hunting lexicon and is related to лі́зти (lízty, to climb).[1] Compare Russian ле́звие (lézvije), Belarusian лязо́ (ljazó).
