From Proto-Mordvinic *mirďə, from Proto-Uralic *mertä, ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥tás. (compare Persian مرد (mard, “man”)). Cognates include Moksha мирде (miŕďe), Udmurt -мурт (-murt) in удмурт (udmurt), Komi-Zyrian морт (mort).
