Etymology

According to the Moscow Accentological School, the шэ́ры form is of Polotsk-Krivich origin, which entered the Central Belarusian dialects and from them into the Belarusian literary language. Cf. Smolensk (Russia) ше́рый and Vitebsk (Belarus) шэ́ды. Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *śěrъ. Displaced native се́ры (sjéry), now dialectal.
