The earlier form was *արհ (*arh) as proven by some compounds and Old Georgian ზარი (zari). A Middle Iranian borrowing: compare Middle Persian (ʾhl /⁠āhr⁠/, dread, fury), Avestan 𐬁𐬌𐬚𐬌𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬥𐬙- (āiθiuuant-, freightening).[1][2] For the loss of -ր- (-r-) compare բահ (bah).
