The origin is uncertain. Has often been linked with Proto-Indo-European words for ‘autumn’: Proto-Slavic *(j)esenь, Proto-Germanic *azaniz, both from Proto-Indo-European *(s)h₁es-, but the comparison is phonologically problematic.
