Old Armenian

Etymology

Borrowed from Iranian. The Iranian etymon is attested as the first member of the title compounded with *pátiš: Parthian 𐭂𐭓𐭎𐭕𐭐𐭕𐭉 (grstpty /grastbed/), Middle Persian 𐭢𐭫𐭮𐭲𐭯𐭲 (glstpt /grastbed/, chief of the supplies) in Shapur I's inscription at the Ka'ba-ye Zartosht and γρασταπατις (grastapatis) (from Old Persian) in a Greek inscription in Mylasa. The basic meaning of the title is probably "chief of caravan animals".
