Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ḱleytr̥- (compare Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌸𐍂𐌰 (hleiþra, booth, tent), Old High German hleitar (ladder)), a derivative of *ḱley- (to lean); compare Ancient Greek κλιτύς (klitús, slope, hill), Latin clīvus.

Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *lḗh₂sr̥ (stony) and cognate with Albanian lerë (stone, heap of stones, stony plain, rockslope), Ancient Greek λᾶας (lâas, stone), Old Irish líe (stone). Perhaps a Mediterranean-European substrate word.
