Old Armenian
Etymology
The origin is uncertain.
Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ḱleytr̥- (compare Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌸𐍂𐌰 (hleiþra, “booth, tent”), Old High German hleitar (“ladder”)), a derivative of *ḱley- (“to lean”); compare Ancient Greek κλιτύς (klitús, “slope, hill”), Latin clīvus.
Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *lḗh₂sr̥ (“stony”) and cognate with Albanian lerë (“stone, heap of stones, stony plain, rockslope”), Ancient Greek λᾶας (lâas, “stone”), Old Irish líe (“stone”). Perhaps a Mediterranean-European substrate word.
