From Arabicبُنْدُق(bunduq, “hazelnut”), q.v., under influence from պնդ-(pnd-, “durable, strong”) and the suffix -ուկ(-uk). The earliest attestation of the form պնդուկ(pnduk) is from 1633. Middle Armenian has պնդուխ(pndux), պնտուխ(pntux), ֆնտուխ(fntux) from the 15th century.
