From Middle High German rucke, variant of rücke, from Old High German rucki, from Proto-Germanic *hrugjaz. Lack of umlaut before a velar geminate is a southern, especially south-eastern German development (compare Bavarian Ruckn, Rucka). The dialectal basis of Yiddish is East Central German with a Bavarian influence.
