Cognate with Turkish burgu (“screw, auger”), Azerbaijani burğu (“screw, drill, auger”), Chagatai بورغو (burğu, “screw, drill, auger”), Kazakh бұрғы (būrğy, “drill bit, auger”) and others, a derivative of the stem in Ottoman Turkish بورمق (burmak, “to twist”) / Turkish burmak (“to twist”), Uzbek бурамоқ (buramoq, “to twist”), Kazakh бұрау (būrau, “drill, auger; to twist”), Bashkir бырау (bıraw, “drill, auger”) etc.
