سخر

سَخِرَ • (saḵira) I (non-past يَسْخَرُ (yasḵaru), verbal noun سُخْرِيَّة (suḵriyya) or سَخَر (saḵar) or سَخْر (saḵr) or سُخُر (suḵur) or سُخْر (suḵr) or سُخْرَة (suḵra) or مَسْخَر (masḵar))

1. to mock, to taunt, to ridicule
   • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 2:212:

     زُيِّنَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَيَسۡخَرُونَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ فَوۡقَهُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ وَٱللَّهُ يَرۡزُقُ مَن يَشَاۤءُ بِغَيۡرِ حِسَابٍ

     zuyyina lillaḏīna kafarū l-ḥayātu d-dunyā wa-yasḵarūna mina llaḏīna ʾāmanū wāllaḏīna ttaqaw fawqahum yawma l-qiyāmati wal-lāhu yarzuqu man yašāʾu biḡayri ḥisābin

     Beautified is the life of this world for those who disbelieve, and they mock at those who believe. But those who fear are above them on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah begifts whom He wills without account.

سَخَّرَ • (saḵḵara) II (non-past يُسَخِّرُ (yusaḵḵiru), verbal noun تَسْخِير (tasḵīr))

1. to subject, make subservient (ه = s.o. s.th., ل = to or for the purpose of)
   • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 22:65:

     أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱلۡفُلۡكَ تَجۡرِي فِي ٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِأَمۡرِهِ

     ʔalam tara ʔanna l-laha saḵḵara lakum mmā fī l-ʔarḍi wal-fulka tajrī fī l-baḥri biʔamrihi

     Have you not seen that God has subjected to you whatever is on the earth and the ships that sail through the sea by His command?
