From Parthian or Middle Persian (sndws, “a silk (or brocade) garment”), from Sogdian (sndws /sandus/, “a silk wear”), compare also Old Armenian սնդուս (sndus) an Iranian loanword. From an Anatolian source, compare Ancient Greek σάνδυξ (sándux, “a Lydian red fabric”), likely ultimately descendant from Akkadian 𒉌𒌓𒍝𒄢 (NA4.GUG /sāmtu, sāntu, sāndu/, “red stone, carnelian, cinnabar”).
