Etymology

From شَرْمَطَ (šarmaṭa, to shred). Most Semitists agree that it is of non-Semitic origin; perhaps from Middle Persian (clm /čarm/, a piece of skin, hide, or leather) (see Persian چرم (čarm)), perhaps conflated with Middle Persian (šlm /šarm/, shame). Compare Hebrew סְמַרְטוּט (s'martút, rag), Aramaic מַרְטוּטָא (marṭūṭā), סְמַרְטוּטָא (səmarṭūṭā, coarse garment).
