Borrowed from Aramaic מוֹרָנָא / *ܡܘܿܪܴܢܳܐ (mōrānā), itself borrowed from Akkadian 𒄑𒈠𒉡𒅊𒅊 (GIŠ.MA.NU.SIG₇.SIG₇ /murrānu/). Equivalent to مُرّ (murr, “bitter”) + ـَان (-ān) from the root م ر ر (m-r-r), for the fruits of the ash are bitter; though Fleischer related it to the root م ر ن (m-r-n) due to the pliable wood being used for spears, like Old English æsċ (“ash”), Ancient Greek μελία (melía, “ash”) and Aramaic מוֹרָנִיתָא / ܡܘܿܪܴܢܺܝܬܴܐ (mōrānīṯā, literally “ash-stick”) specifically denote a spear as well—the presence of this root in the other Semitic languages is not without doubt.
