Etymology

From Proto-Iranian *maiĵ- (to blink, wink), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayš- (to blink, wink), from Proto-Indo-European *meyg⁽ʷ⁾ʰ- (to blink, cover (the eyes)). Cognate with Sanskrit मिष् (miṣ, to wink), Lithuanian miẽgas (sleep), Proto-Slavic *měžiti (to close one's eyes).[1] Alternatively, from موی (muy, hair) +‎ ـژه (že, diminutive suffix). Akin to Sogdian (miža, muža), and Mazanderani میجیک (mijik).
