Etymology
Inherited from Old Burmese ချန် (khyan), from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *kyin¹ ~ *ʔgyin¹ (“sour”); compare Akha (tjhɛ́, “sour”) (STEDT). The Lolo-Burmese is traditionally connected to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *suːr ~ *swaːr (“sour; be acid”) (whence Mizo thûr (“acid; sour”), Old Chinese 酸 (OC *sloːn, “sour”)), despite the Lolo-Burmese forms not matching.
