Shanidze supposes, that the word comes from ინდო (indo, “India”) + -ური (-uri) ფრინველი (prinveli), where only the adjective part remained and then vowel change ოუ -> აუ happened.[1] Compare ბულგარული (bulgaruli, “Capsicum annuum”) with similar development in speech.
