From Proto-Hellenic *yêkʷər, from Proto-Indo-European *Hyékʷr̥. The noun was changed to a T-stem, presumably due to contamination from words like ὄνομᾰ (ónoma); the expected oblique base would be *hepan- (written *ηπαν-) or *ipan- (written *ιπαν-).
