From 茶番(ちゃばん) (chaban, tea server) and 狂言(きょうげん) (kyōgen), humorous short plays performed between noh plays. The performances originated in Edo during the Hōei period (1704-1711) as an interlude between kabuki plays while tea or sake was served.[1]
