Con questo termine venne chiamato, al tempo dei Tannaim, il "dicitore" in aramaico della Mishna, insegnata dal Tanna in ebraico. Divenne l'appellativo degli studiosi del Talmud, che appunto commentarono in aramaico la Mishna, dando vita al Talmud.
