Northern Kurdish

Etymology

Compare dialectal çêrrok, from çêrr (mention, recount, telling; swearword) +‎ -ok (diminutive suffix); akin to çîvanok (myth, legend) (from *çîrrvan (storyteller) +‎ -ok), çêrr/çêl kirin (to mention; to recount; to cuss), çîrreçîrr (gibberish; shouting), from an earlier *dêr, as seen in dîrok (history) dêrîn (ancient, archaic), dûrik (song), dîlan (dance), Zazaki dêr (song), Central Kurdish چڕین (çrrîn, to sing). The /ç/ and /rr/ must be later developments from /d/ and /r/; compare dirrandin > çirrandin (to tear). Further etymology is unknown. Perhaps related to terrane (joke, fun) and Persian ترانه (song), from Proto-Indo-European *terh₂- (to pass through).
