Northern Kurdish
Etymology
Compare dialectal çêrrok, from çêrr (“mention, recount, telling; swearword”) + -ok (“diminutive suffix”); akin to çîvanok (“myth, legend”) (from *çîrrvan (“storyteller”) + -ok), çêrr/çêl kirin (“to mention; to recount; to cuss”), çîrreçîrr (“gibberish; shouting”), from an earlier *dêr, as seen in dîrok (“history”) dêrîn (“ancient, archaic”), Zazaki dêr (“song”), dîlan (“dance”). The /ç/ and /rr/ must be later developments from /d/ and /r/; compare dirrandin > çirrandin (“to tear”). Further etymology is unknown. Perhaps related to terrane (“joke, fun”) and Persian ترانه (“song”), from Proto-Indo-European *terh₂- (“to pass through”).
