A learned αντιδάνειο (antidáneio, “repatriated loanword”).[1] Learned borrowing from Italian arcipelago,[2] from Byzantine Greek ἀρχιπέλαγος (arkhipélagos) which is Ancient Greek ἀρχι- (arkhi-, “main”) + πέλαγος (pélagos, “sea”), a designation for the Aegean Sea. Attested since 1728 in Katharevousa as ἀρχιπέλαγος (arkhipélagos).[3]
