According to Beekes, derived from δέχομαι (dékhomai, “I take, accept”), from Proto-Indo-European *deḱ- (“to take”).[1] Cognate to Latin doceō (“I teach, show, rehearse”) and Latin dignus (“fitting, worthy”).
