From Proto-Hellenic *tíktō, from Proto-Indo-European *títḱeti, an i-reduplicated present formed from the root *teḱ- (“beget, bring forth”). Cognate with τέκνον (téknon, “child”), τέκτων (téktōn, “builder”), τέχνη (tékhnē, “craft”).
