Uncertain. Identical to Latin phasēlus, of which it is likely the etymon, though traditionally the opposite direction has also been proposed. Albanian bathë (thick bean), (reflecting a root *bʰaḱ-, whence also φακός (phakós)) has led to claims of an Illyrian source.
