Probably from Ukrainian баско́ (baskó, “stubborn worker”),[1] баски́й (baskýj, “high-spirited, fast, quick, agile, lively”).[2] Perhaps ultimately from Proto-Slavic *basъkъ.[3]
Cognate with Middle Russian Баско (Basko), Басков (Baskov), are recorded in Nizhny Novgorod in the 17th century;[4] modern Russian Ба́сков (Báskov).
