From жай- (žaj-), of uncertain origin but possibly connected with the first part of га́йворон (hájvoron, “rook”), + во́рон (vóron) + -ок (-ok).[1] Compare Russian жа́воронок (žávoronok), Belarusian жа́варанак (žávaranak), Proto-Slavic *skovornъ and its descendants.
