Ukrainian
Etymology
Literally, “hellish flours”, a deliberate mistranslation of Russian а́дские му́ки (ádskije múki, “hellish tortures”).
First appeared in 2018 as a mockery of Russian trolls, who clumsily pretended to be Ukrainians on social networks and were exposed due to absurd errors made by machine translations. The term especially surged in popularity after October 2022 with the start of Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and another failed attempt by Russians to impersonate Ukrainians online by announcing a “flash mob” with the hashtag #LightOnZelenskyyOff to stir up popular anger against the Ukrainian government.
