Etymology

Uncertain, Yegorov suggests an inheritance from Proto-Turkic *bẹ̄ĺčik (cradle),[1] however this causes a phonological problem as that would have yielded something akin to пеҫӗ (peś̬ĕ). Due to this, Fedotov instead suggests a derivation from Proto-Turkic *bēle- (to swaddle) comparing Tatar биләүсә (biläwsä, diaper) from биләргә (bilärgä, to swaddle).[2] Róna-Tas also states that the variations in phonology may be due to both *bẹ̄ĺčik and *bēle- influencing eachother over time.[3]

Noun

пелче (pelč̬e) (plural пелчесем)

  1. diaper
