From Proto-Mordvinic *päšťə, from Proto-Finno-Permic *päškɜ. Cognates include Moksha пяште (päšťe), Finnish pähkinä, Votic pähtšene, Livonian pē’gõz, Eastern Mari пӱкш (pükš), Udmurt пашпу (pašpu, “hazelnut bush”) and possibly also Komi-Zyrian пашкан (paškan, “rosehip”).
