Etymology

From с- (s-) +‎ мека́ть (mekátʹ, to understand, to think (dialectal)), from Proto-Slavic *mětiti. The transition /t'/ to /k/ instead of the expected /ч/ indicates that the source of the word was the Old Novgorod or Old Pskov dialects, where this transition was regular,[1] compare the dialectal (Pskov) сустрека́ть (sustrekátʹ) 'to meet'.
