Etymology

Certainly an Iranian borrowing, but the exact source is unclear.

According to Périkhanian, from Middle Median *axšōβž, *axšuβž, from Proto-Iranian *xšub- (to become excited; to be in commotion); compare Avestan 𐬑𐬱𐬀𐬊𐬠- (xšaob-, agitate), Sanskrit क्षुभ्यति (kṣúbhyati, shake). The Median word was borrowed into Middle Persian 𐫀𐫟𐫢𐫇𐫉 (ʾxšwz /axšōz/, striving).

According to Ałayan, from an Iranian compound *xšaoǰa (having power, mighty), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *xšaH- (to rule, be lord of) (whence Avestan 𐬑𐬱𐬁- (xšā-, to be able; rule, be lord of)) and *auǰah- (strength, power) (whence ոյժ (oyž)).
