Etymology
A Middle Iranian borrowing; compare Middle Persian (ʾpwlyt), 𐫀𐫛𐫇𐫡𐫏𐫅 (ʾpwryd /appurēd/, “to steal, carry off”). Ačaṙean explains the Iranian formation as *apa- (“away”) + *par- (“to pass”), comparing Avestan 𐬥𐬌-𐬞𐬁𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (ni-pāraiieiti, “to appropriate something”) and Sanskrit अपपरे (apa-pare, “to go off”).
