Of uncertain origin. Martirosyan tentatively suggests derivation from Proto-Indo-European *sél-e/os- with Ancient Greek ἕλος (hélos, “marsh-meadow”) and Sanskrit सरस् (sáras-, “lake, pool”) as cognates.
