From *մերձի (*merji), from *մեձրի (*mejri), from Proto-Indo-European *méǵʰ(s)ri. Cognate with Ancient Greek μέχρι (mékhri) and possibly Albanian ndjerë. The ending -ի (-i) survives in մերձենամ (merjenam), from *մերձիանամ (*merjianam).
