Borrowed from Middle Median *nižōg or Parthian (/*nižōg/), from Proto-Iranian *nižaugah (“male horse”, literally “ejecting seminal fluid”), from the prefix *niž- (“out, away”) + the participle of *aug- / *auǰ- (“to be wet; to emit fluids; to sprinkle”). See also վարուժան (varužan).
