Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéyos, from *ǵʰey- (to drive, impel, stimulate; to throw). Cognate with Sanskrit हय (háya, horse). According to Martirosyan, Old Armenian ձի (ji) and Sanskrit हय (háya) represent a poetic word, belonging to the “language of gods”, as opposed to the usual unmarked Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos (horse), whence Sanskrit अश्व (aśva) and Old Armenian էշ (ēš).
