Etymology
The original spelling is պարեգաւտ (paregawt), a Southwestern Iranian borrowing. Ultimately probably from Old Persian *parigauda-, a compound with the prefix *pari- (“around”) and the root *gauz- (“to hide, conceal”), on which see Sanskrit गूहति (gū́hati). The Iranian word is not attested but it was borrowed into many languages: Ancient Greek παραγαύδης (paragaúdēs), παραγαῦδιν (paragaûdin), παραγαύδιον (paragaúdion), παραγώδας (paragṓdas), Latin paragauda, Aramaic פרגד (prgd /pargod/), פֶרגּוֹדָא (prgwdˀ), Classical Syriac ܦܪܓܘܕܝܢ (prgwdyn /pargawdīn/), Coptic ⲡⲁⲣⲁⲕⲁⲩⲇⲓⲟⲛ (parakaudion), Old Georgian პარეგავტი (ṗaregavṭi), პალეკარტი (ṗaleḳarṭi).
