From Proto-Semitic*ḥimār-(“donkey”). Cognate with Arabicحِمَار(ḥimār). Called after their reddish-brown to gray color, which they share with clay, whose Hebrew equivalent חֹמֶר(khómer) originates from the same root. For a similar etymology, cf.
