دست دادن

From دَست (dast, “hand”) +‎ دادَن (dâdan, “to give”).

دَست دادَن • (dast dâdan) (intransitive)

1. to shake hands

   علی با من دست داد. ― ali bâ man dast dâd. ― Ali shook hands with me.

2. to give one's hand (in marriage, in agreement, etc.)
3. (of an emotion, etc.) to arise; to come about; to come upon (a person)
   • c. 1390, Shams-ud-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥāfiẓ, “Ghazal 12”, in دیوان حافظ [The Divān of Ḥāfiẓ]‎:

     کی دهد دست این غرض یا رب که همدستان شوند
     خاطر مجموع ما، زلف پریشان شما

     kay dahad dast īn ğaraz yā rabb ki hamdastān šawand
     xātir-i majmu'-i mā, zulf-i parēšān-i šumā

     How these yearnings, o Lord, that become my companions come about:
     The collected heart of mine, the scattered curls of yours.

4. (of opportunity) to arrive, to arise

   اگر دست بدهد ― agar dast bedehad ― If the opportunity arrives

   • 1962, Jalal Al-e-Ahmad, غرب‌زدگی [Occidentosis: A Plague from the West]:

     مشخّصات این درد را بجوییم و علّت یا علّت‌هایش را. و اگر دست داد، راه علاجش را.

     mošaxxasât-e in dard râ bejuyim va ellat yâ ellat-hâ-yaš râ. va agar dast dâd, râh-e elâj-aš râ.

     Let us seek out the diagnosis for this pain, and its cause or causes. And, if possible, its cure.
