Etymology 1

Contraction of ܒܝܬ ܐܣܕܐ (bêṯ ʾĕsāḏē, pillow, couch, place to rest upon, literally at the pillows), from ܒܝܬ (house; site, position, location) and ܐܣܕܐ (ʾĕsāḏā, pillow); inherited from earlier Aramaic אִיסָדָא (ʾĕsāḏā, thing placed beneath, at the base or bottom; pillow). Cognate to Hebrew יְסוֹד (yǝsṓḏ, base, foundation), Arabic وِسَادَة (wisāda, a thing placed under the base of the head to sleep upon; cushion, seat or place to rest something upon), Ugaritic 𐎊𐎒𐎄 (ysd, base, foundation), Akkadian 𒅖𒁲 (/išdu/, base, foundation), ultimately Proto-Semitic in origin. Also found as Jewish Babylonian Aramaic בֵּיסָדְיָא (bēsāḏyā, pillow), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic בֵּי סָדְיָא (bē sāḏyā, pillow), and Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܣܦܵܕܝܼܬ݂ܵܐ (spādīṯā, pillow).
