From Aramaic עֵדָּנָא (ʿeddānā), from Akkadian 𒌓𒅗𒂵 (adānum); compare Hebrew עִדָּן ('idán), Arabic عِدَّان (ʕiddān) and doublet of ܘܲܥܕܵܐ (waˁdā, appointed time). Masculine in Classical Syriac and feminine in Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, probably originally masculine but analyzed as feminine because the feminine gender is often used for instantiations.
